We are a team composed of senior research scientists, graduate students, undergraduates, and high school interns.
Clay C. C. Wang, Lab Chief
I was born in Tokyo, Japan and spent my childhood in Taiwan. After attending a prep school in New Hampshire, I moved to Harvard for my undergrad working in the laboratory of Professor George Whitesides. I graduated magna cum laude in Chemistry in 1996. At Caltech I studied DNA binding small molecules called polyamides in the laboratory of Professor Peter Dervan and defended my Ph.D. thesis in the summer of 2001. Between 2001 and 2003, I was a NIH funded postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University working in the laboratory of Professor Chaitan Khosla. At the Khosla group I worked on heterologous expression systems for bacterial secondary metabolism pathways. Since 2003, I have been a faculty at the University of Southern California. I am currently Department Chair and Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the School of Pharmacy and Professor of Chemistry at the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Science at the University of Southern California.
Yi Ming Chiang, Senior Research Fellow
I graduated from the National Taiwan University. My expertise is in natural products isolation and characterization.
Weiwen Sun, Graduate Student
I am currently the senior graduate student in the Wang lab. I study the secondary metabolism pathways in Aspergillus terreus.
Johannes van Dijk, Graduate Student Lab Manager
Jan received his BSc and MSc from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and after two years of working as an RA at the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland in Australia he started his PhD at the School of Pharmacy.
Jillian Romsdahl, Graduate Student
I earned my BS in Chemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2012. I am currently a third year PhD student in Dr. Clay Wang's lab at the USC School of Pharmacy. My research focuses on understanding the influence of microgravity and enhanced radiation on the production of fungal secondary metabolites.
Kevin Lin, Graduate Student
I graduated from UCLA in Chemical Engineering. My Ph.D. project is on using Aspergillus nidulans as a production host for natural products. I also developed software to mine fungal genomes.
Michelle Grau, Graduate Student
I graduated from University of San Diego in Chemistry. I am currently synthesising molecules for our Alzheimer project.
Ada Blachowicz, Graduate Student
I graduated from Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Poland with Master’s degree in biotechnology. Currently I am a first year Ph.D. in the Wang group. I joined the Wang lab to study secondary metabolism of fungal species returned from the International Space Station.
USC Undergrads in the Wang Group
The Wang group provides USC undergrads interested in chemical biology a working environment to take their knowledge from textbooks into practice. Graduates from our undergrad program have moved to pursue MD, PharmD, and PhD degrees.
Joy Ahn, Undergraduate Researcher
I am currently a sophomore majoring in Chemistry at USC. I work on discovering new drugs fro Alzheimer disease. This summer I am a USC Provost Summer Fellow.
Stephanie Loekman, Undergraduate Researcher
I am currently an undergraduate student at USC, double majoring in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and Psychology. This summer I am a Dornsife College Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow (SURF).
Austen Le, Undergraduate Researcher
I am currently an undergraduate student studying Biochemistry and Narrative Studies at USC.
Wang Group High School Team
The Wang group provides an environment for highly motivated high school students to experience life as a working scientist. Graduates from our high school program have gone on to some of the top Universities in this country and all are now working in STEM related fields as physicians and research scientists.
Ada (Bao Bao) Li, High School Science Researcher
I am currently a Junior at Westridge School in Pasadena, CA. I am glad to be part of the Wang group Science Team.
Justin Nakama, High School Science Researcher
I am currently a Sophomore at Crescenta Valley High School. I work on understanding the secondary metabolism of filamentous fungi returned from our Space Project.
Bethany Chen, High School Science Researcher
I am currently a Junior at South Pasadena High School. I am part of the Wang group High School Space Biology Team.
Elizabeth Cheng, High School Science Researcher
I am currently a Junior at San Marino High School. I am part of the Wang group High School Space Biology Team.
Kara Lee, High School Science Researcher
I am currently a Junior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. I am part of the Wang group High School Space Biology Team.
Ting Wei (Kevin) Chang, High School Researcher
I am currently a Sophomore at West Covina High School. I am part of the Wang group High School Space Biology Team.
